LD-50
When referring to a substance, the term "LD-50" denotes the quantity which will typically kill 50% of a population.
The oral* LD-50 for caffeine is roughly 120mg/kg in humans*. What this means is that if one-thousand people who all weighed 180lbs were to consume 12g of caffeine (about 169 bottles each of JoltTM cola, one-immediately-after-another), an average of five-hundred participants would die as a result. *NOTE : When determining the LD-50 for a given substance, make sure to obtain the figure which corresponds to the method of exposure and population species, as many figures are given for intraveneous injection in laboratory rats rather than oral consumption by humans.©1997 Eclipsing Suns Information Management - All Rights Reserved
